The Mashed Potato Incident

Well.... we made our first trip with Charlie to the Emergency Room at WakeMed North on 1/6/12. After microwaving a plate of mashed potatoes, we could not get it out of Charlie's reach before he slid his hand almost entirely into them. As you can probably imagine, he screamed and writhed in pain until he was given a shot of morphine at the hospital.

He burned his left middle and ring fingers- one finger blistered badly and a layer of skin came off the other one. Anyway, he wore the most adorable baby hospital gown while there, and they wrapped his hand up in Silvadene cream and gauze to soothe it.

We had to come back the next night (doctor's order) just so they could check it again. Our little "check" turned out to take 3 hours..... very frustrating. Charlie got a good report, though, and we followed up with his pediatrician that Monday.

He found so many ways to pull his gauze off that I finally just started putting band-aids on his fingers. They are healing nicely!

Here is Charlie having some adequately cooled mashed potatoes several nights later:
